Our history

Our history

It all began in our grandmother's garage. And a lot has happened since then.

Our story has started in 1936 in our grandmother's garage in Basel. Since then, MAX MÜLLER has grown into one of the world's leading manufacturers of process observation solutions.

Since 1973, the company has been managed by the second generation, and since 2020 by the third generation. As a family business, we stand for quality and continuity.

In order to be as close as possible to our clients, we have established a subsidiary in England in 1990 and one in Germany in 1995.

1936

Foundation and turbulent times

Our story begins in 1936, in our grandmother's garage in Basel. Max Müller, our grandfather, founded the company “Max Müller, Ing. Technisches Bureau” (hereinafter referred to as “MAX MÜLLER”). We become the general agent of a German electrical engineering manufacturer and import electric motors. Initially, the chemical industry in Basel is supplied, later customers throughout Switzerland. Goods are primarily handled in the courtyard between the garage and our grandparents' home.

From 1939 onwards, domestic orders from the German war economy took priority and deliveries to MAX MÜLLER dwindled until they dried up completely after the Allied invasion in September 1944. The young company had to focus on repair jobs, which often required a great deal of improvisation due to war rationing.

1949

Recovery and expansion

After the war and the currency reform, the old relationships are resumed. MAX MÜLLER takes on new representations, also in the process engineering sector. The company now supplies various sectors of Swiss industry and expands its workforce. The first trade fair appearances in Switzerland follow.

Powder feeders and complete agitator drives for the chemical and food industries are manufactured from components from different suppliers. In addition, equipment for laboratories, submersible pumps for municipal waterworks, and measuring devices for general industrial use are sold.

1958

The first light fitting

At the suggestion of a client, MAX MÜLLER developed the first light fitting in 1958, consisting of a converted “General Electric” hand lamp. It contains a filament bulb, an on-off-switch and a fxiation system that enables various mounting positions. Initially, the light fitting was only sold to the chemical industry in Basel, but the client base gradually expanded.

The next important innovations were the first light fitting with an integrated transformer (CHEMLUX® product series) in 1969 and the world's first [Ex] halogen light fitting in 1977. In the following years, the light fittings were continuously developed, adapted to new standards, and optimized, often in cooperation with clients. Since 1973, our [Ex] light fittings have been certified by the PTB in Braunschweig, for the use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

The agency business is continued in parallel to this day, now under the name “MAX MÜLLER – Precision drive systems and industrial equipment” (www.maxmuellerag.ch).

1973

Internationalization and second generation

In 1973, MAX MÜLLER takes part in the industry's most important international trade fair, the ACHEMA in Frankfurt, for the first time. The new, patented lighting concept arouses great interest and leads to international orders. MAX MÜLLER subsequently exhibits at trade fairs in France and the United Kingdom and begins to work with foreign resellers.

Dr. Ing.-chem. Hans Georg Müller takes over the management in 1974. He emphasizes the technical and commercial development of the light fittings and the sight glasses. Brand names such as CHEMLUX® and VETROLUX® become synonymous with quality products and further innovations follow: MAX MÜLLER presents the world's smallest non-[Ex] light fitting (BKVLR© product series) in 1983 and the first [Ex] light fitting with a stainless steel housing (EdelEx© product series) in 1992.

1990

Subsidiaries in the United Kingdom and in Germany

MAX MÜLLER establishes a subsidiary in England in 1990, to ensure optimum customer service and short delivery times. Today, it is run by the second generation and is a reliable partner for our customers in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The subsidiary in Germany was founded in 1995 with the same aim. It not only serves the existing client base, but becomes a pioneer in the biogas industry. Today, it is our Centre of Excellence for biogas solutions, which are used worldwide. With the opening of the new building in Kamen in 2014, the office, production, and storage capacities are greatly expanded and the foundation for a successful future is laid.

1999

ISO and ATEX certification

While our products have been known for their quality for decades, growth and internationalization require new instruments in corporate management. For this reason, MAX MÜLLER introduces a quality management system in accordance with ISO 9001 in 1999, in order to strongly anchor quality awareness and the continuous improvement process.

With the introduction of the ATEX directive, ATEX certification becomes necessary. MAX MÜLLER receives the first ATEX certification in 2001, in cooperation with the LCIE in Paris. In addition to the products, the manufacturing and documentation processes are certified, with focus on product quality and traceability.

Our ISO and ATEX certifications are put to the test internally and externally every year. Since the beginning, we have passed all audits without any major deviations, a sign of the high quality awareness of our staff.

2003

Relocation to Allschwil, product innovations, and continuity

In 2003, MAX MÜLLER moves into its new headquarters in Allschwil. The space at the original location, around our grandparents' home, had become far too scarce. The new location combines modern offices with an efficient production facility and a large warehouse.

Shortly before, in 2001, we launched the first ATEX-certified fiber optic light fitting (fibroLUX© product series). This was followed in 2009 by the world's smallest [Ex] zoom camera in a stainless steel housing (VideoLUX© product series).

In 2016, Dipl. Ing. Roger Blenny retires after 35 years at MAX MÜLLER. As Technical Director and Deputy Managing Director, he played a key role in shaping the development of the company and its products. We owe him a great debt of gratitude. Ten years earlier, he had introduced his son, M.Eng. Stéphane Blenny, to the company. At MAX MÜLLER, the generations follow one another, not only at the head of the company but also within the workforce – we are a family business in the truest sense of the word.

2017

Third generation and modernization

After 46 years at MAX MÜLLER, Dr. Hans Georg Müller hands over the company to his two sons, Dr. Andreas Müller and Dr. Philipp Müller, in 2020. While Andreas becomes Chairman of the Board, Philipp takes over operational management, after a three-year transition period. Shortly afterwards, we are faced with major challenges due to the outbreak of COVID-19, particularly with regard to supply chain issues and preventive health measures.

Since 2020, we have comprehensively modernized the company. We have expanded our project team, implemented a new ERP system, and adapted our processes. At the same time, we have modernized our corporate presence, with focus on our two core values: Quality (“Swiss excellence”) and tradition (“Since 1936”).

We have strenghened our engineering team to boost innovations. In 2023, we present the world's smallest high-performance light fitting (SKLR© product series). This is followed by the the world's smallest [Ex] light fitting (nanoEx© product series) in 2024. This period also marks the end of the halogen era. The future belongs to LED technology.
